Botulinum toxin for cosmesis in the peri-ocular region

Botulinum toxin injections help to minimise the signs of ageing and reduce facial wrinkles

Botulinum toxin for cosmesis in the peri-ocular region

It is perhaps the most frequently performed cosmetic procedure in the world. It involves multiple injections of small aliquots of Botulinum toxin A around or into the periocular and facial muscles to denervate and deactivate the muscle, thus reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Depending on what the desired outcome is, the injections are placed in muscles around the eyes and face and need to be repeated in a few months.

The procedure takes about 20 minutes to perform, is performed in a clean room in the clinic area and the effect is seen between 3-7 days after the injection.

As with any intervention there are risks of bruising, infection, over or under action of the injection, but any adverse effect is temporary as the effect of the toxin disappears in about three months once new nerve endings have sprouted up.

It’s natural to feel anxious when it comes to treatment and surgical procedures especially in relation to your eyes. I encourage you to ask questions about your condition, so I can help you to be better informed of your condition, the treatment options available and allay any fears that you may have. During the consultation I will explain the procedures to you and help you to make positive choices, and remember there is always the option of doing nothing, so you have nothing to worry about.
